worldsurface.com hits 25,000 for the first time

London & New York, NY--(COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--August 4, 2000--worldsurface.com today reported that on Tuesday August 2nd it’s website delivered over 25,000 pages to the traveling community. The website, whose long term plans have not been revealed, is currently hosting what have been described as this summers best travelers competitions.

The first of these, the ‘Global Reporter Competition” was launched 60 days ago with the goal of identifying the very best of the next generation of online travel journalists. To enter, students and other independent travelers are invited to submit a travel story or a page of an ‘on the road’ travel diary. Worldsurface.com members then vote for their favorite writers and the 10 winners will be given airline tickets to selected global destinations, 3 month assignments and monies to fund their trip.

Worldsurface.com is also holding a monthly draw for those members that leave reviews of places that they have found on the road. So far 2 students, one from the UK, the other from Germany have won free flights to New York.

Simon North, one of the founders of worldsurface.com, explained, “We started this in response to all of the other internet sites out there that look like they’re for independent travelers but are really just travel agencies selling expensive packaged tours.

Independent travel is not about that. It’s not about a package or a tour or traveling the same route as everybody else. It’s about adventure, it’s about exploring, it’s about discovering new things and telling other travelers what you’ve found. And that is what worldsurface.com is becoming, a real home for independent travel and independent travelers on the internet. Travelers are coming together to share stories, share experiences and reclaim the spirit of independent travel.

To hit 25,000 pages in such a short period demonstrates the support we have in the community. Travelers are fed up with guide books, they don’t tell you what a place is really like, they don’t describe the joy of waking up in a rainforest, or how it feels to watch the sun rise over the Taj Mahal or quite how weird it is swimming with dolphins in the Indian Ocean. Our site does and we will do it live when our 10 winning travelers start traveling.”

www.worldsurface.com will formally launch later this year and further details will be released nearer the time.
