The new quarter is for Missouri, the �Show Me State.� It�s the first circulating coin to honor Lewis and Clark�s historic expedition that began nearly 200 years ago from St. Charles, Missouri. The launch celebration also marks the first time in the program that the official ceremony has coincided with a state�s birthday. Missouri became the 24th state on August 10, 1821. U.S. Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore:

Launched in 1999, the United States Mint�s 50 state quarters program is a 10-year initiative that honors each of the nation�s states in the order they joined the union or ratified the constitution. Each quarter is produced for approximately 10 weeks and will never be produced again. Surveys show that over a hundred-thirty million Americans are collecting the quarters.
