According to a recent survey from the National Retail Federation, U.S. consumers will be spending more money this year on back-to-school purchases - over 14-billion dollars.  This spending is fueled by billions of dollars in child tax credit checks being mailed out this month to over 25-million american families.  Roughly half of consumers with school-age children plan to buy electronics and computer related equipment for back-to-school.  Family technology expert, Robin Raskin, also known as the Internet-Mom:

Today, kids who are going to high school or college want a lightweight notebook computer, like the Apple iBook or Sony Vio.  They can keep organized with the Palm Zia and they wont miss class lectures when they use the Olympus W-10 digital voice recorder.  Parents who want to keep in touch with their kids might consider an Internet cell phone, like the Nokia 36-50.  As a mother of three that are headed back to school this month, I start my shopping at Amazon-dot-com.  It offers great prices and selection and the site features reviews from other consumers and in-house experts.
