Flu season is upon us.  Medical experts are urging Americans not to let their guard down against influenza this year.  At a news conference held today, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and the nations top influenza experts are warning that flu season is unpredictable, and urge both healthy and high-risk Americans to get vaccinated beginning in October. Doctor William Schaffner of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases:

Influenza is responsible for more than 114,000hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths every year more deaths than AIDS.  Since we are fortunate to have an ample supply of flu vaccine, we urge everyone, especially those who are at-risk for complications, to seek vaccination beginning in October.

Those most at risk for complications from influenza include the elderly, people with chronic medical conditions such as asthma or diabetes, and children between the ages of six and 23 months.
