ABA Continues Push for Diversity

Minorities represent about 25 percent of our population, but in the legal profession they constitute just 10 percent.  The president of the American Bar Association, Dennis Archer, wants to change those statistics:

 "When people of color walk in to courtrooms, the chances are small that the judges who hear their cases will look like they do or will have shared experiences where color is a factor."

This week the nation's largest lawyers group is hosting a summit to figure out how to open the "pipeline" to minorities and the guest list is a who's-who among lawyers and major corporations, government and law firms:

"I view the business community and in particular, corporate general counsels working in tandem with government leaders, as key motivators to change the culture of the legal profession to match our broader society."

Archer says diversity is essential to ensuring public trust and confidence in the legal system.
