Sometime on Saturday, January 3rd, a NASA rover named "Spirit" will attempt a soft landing on the planet Mars. If it succeeds, it will begin the most comprehensive search for evidence of liquid water ever attempted on the red planet. On Sunday PBS will air a Nova special on the creation of the "Spirit" rover and its mission to Mars. Doctor Steven Squires, a Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University and a principal investigator for the Mars exploration rover project:

"For the first time people will be able to look at another planet down on the surface as if you were standing there yourself with vision thats as good as human 20/20 vision. You can look off in the distance and we can see something thats interesting and then, for the first time, we can actually go there. I think its going to open peoples eyes for the possibility of what exploring other planets can really be like."

The Nova special airs at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on PBS Sunday, January 4th, with a special encore Tuesday, January 6th, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
