According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Nile Virus spread by mosquitoes can affect people of all ages, not just those over 50. To prevent West Nile, Dr. Jonathan Day at the University of Florida urges everyone to avoid mosquitoes and take extra precaution at dawn and dusk when they are most active.

Dr. Jonathan Day: "If you have to be out during those times, cover as much skin as you can with clothing that the mosquitoes cannot bite through, there are lots of fabrics that are densely woven fabrics that will protect your arms, your legs and your ankles. Finally, use a repellent that contains the active ingredient DEET on areas of exposed skin."

The concentration of DEET in the product determines the duration of protection. The CDC says that DEET-based repellents "are very safe" when used according to label directions.
