The private sector is generating help for victims of Hurricane Charley. When Hardee County's only solid waste facility lost power, the world's leading premium drinks company, Diageo, delivered one of the first corporate-sponsored humanitarian aid missions, providing a generator to keep it running and help ease public health concerns. Diageo Director of Government Relations, Sonya Deen:

"Immediately we reached out to the state and we asked what we could do. Within 24 hours we had generators headed to this part of the state. The first generator ended up at the county landfill, primary use being basically packaging, containing, compacting and recycling."

Loss of electrical power knocked out the sanitation facility causing potentially dangerous and unsanitary conditions, as all of the county's trash and debris piled up.  The two additional generators are now powering a local campground - temporary shelter for thousands displaced by the storm.
