Back-to-school season means getting ready for breakfasts on-the-go, packing healthy lunches and preparing more family meals.

This school year, parents should try to add naturally nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lowfat dairy and lean meats, to their shopping lists to pack more essential nutrients into their family's meals.  Martha Belury, Registered Dietitian with the Council for Women's Nutrition Solutions:

"While children's waistlines are expanding, an increasing number of kids also are deficient in key nutrients that they need to perform well in school and to grow properly.  Parents can choose foods, like lean beef that provide more nutrients and fewer calories to help their kids get more power in every bite."

Shop for the naturally nutrient-rich foods found near the perimeter of the store, the fresh produce section, meat aisles and dairy cases.  Also look for "lean" when shopping for meats.  There are now 19 cuts of beef that meet government guidelines for leanness.  For a wallet card listing these cuts, visit w-w-w-beefitswhatsfordinner-dot-com.  And paint your plate with a variety of colorful fruits and vegetable to get more nutrients.
