According to a new study published in The Journal of Nutrition, a diet rich in whole grain cereals can help older Americans avoid weight gain and stay slender.  Researchers at Tufts University found that participants who ate whole grain cereals had significantly lower body fat and smaller waistlines as they aged.  Carla Heiser registered dietitian:

Having a diet thats rich in fiber and 100 percent whole grains is going to be helpful and healthful to lose weight and change body composition to maintain your energy levels.

Heiser noted that the Tufts University study recommended eating more fruits, whole grain cereals and low fat milk.  Research also showed that women who frequently ate breakfast cereals such as Cheerios, Wheaties and Total weighed on average nine pounds less than women who didnt.
