Spring is here and many families are gearing up for home renovation projects.  But before getting started, they probably need to add one item to that to-do list: Get a tetanus booster.  Tetanus is a potentially fatal disease and the bacteria can be found everywhere.  According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of injuries resulting in tetanus infections happen indoors or at home.  But less than half of adults over the age of 20 are protected against tetanus and diphtheria, another potentially fatal disease.   One vaccine prevents against tetanus and diphtheria, since repeat boosting is needed for both diseases.  Doctor Susan Rehm, Medical Director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases:

Simple cuts or scrapes, even a splinter, can put you at risk for a tetanus infection.  The only sure prevention is to stay up-to-date on your tetanus booster, which needs to be renewed every 10 years.
