According to a Roper-A-S-W nationally representative survey of households with children younger than 18 living at home, parents stated that once the flu hits a household it takes nearly two weeks to run its course. Parents reported losing approximately three days of work and children approximately four days of school. Parents surveyed perceive that children are at a much greater risk of catching the flu than adults with school-age children being most at risk. The survey was sponsored by Medimmune Vaccine, Inc., and Wyatt Vaccines. Staats Abrahams, Senior Vice President of Roper-A-S-W:

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that children are highly susceptible to catching the flu, yet they are rarely vaccinated against it. Our study supports this finding. It shows that 64 percent of parents interviewed have never had any of their children vaccinated against the flu."

Many healthcare professionals immunize against the flu between October and November, although the C-D-C advises that vaccinations can be beneficial even beyond December. Flu season usually peaks between December and March.
