As Americans prepare for the holidays, a world organization is asking us to remember those impacted by the AIDS epidemic. Worldwide, AIDS has claimed 20 million lives, six million of them children. In recognition of World AIDS Day, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan points up the problem:
"AIDS is spreading very fast. Its continuing to its lethal march across the globe. Every minute, ten people are infected."
The United Nations Foundation along with the Ad Council developed a television public service campaign called "Apathy is Lethal." U.N.F. President, Tim Wirth:
"Were hoping that these public service ads will serve as a wake-up call for Americans to recognize the depth of the AIDS problem."
The Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, Doctor Richard Feachem says we may be turning the corner:
"We have the leadership, we have the affordable technologies, and increasingly, we have the money to fuel the struggle against H-I-V AIDS on a massive scale."
