More people than ever are surviving first heart attacks, but are survivors doing all they can to prevent a second one?

Every year, almost half a million heart attack survivors in the U.S. experience another heart attack. Yet many stop taking a widely prescribed medication called a Beta Blocker that reduces this risk, and the risk of death, by up to 40 percent. Thats why the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare, a non-profit alliance of leading health plans, is working with the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, to launch a campaign called "Heart Beat for Life." Doctor Harlan Krumholz of the A-H-A says the message is simple if youre prescribed a Beta Blocker medication, you need to take it for the rest of your life.

"We know that taking a Beta Blocker long-term significantly reduces the risk of a second heart attack, but only if patients continue to take the medication."
