Americans continue to fly in increasing numbers, helping to push holiday travel up by more than two percent this Christmas and New Year's period, according to Triple-A. Of the nearly 60 million Americans who are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday, the majority, 81 percent, will drive. Another 14 percent plan to fly, with the remaining five percent going by train, bus, or some other mode of transportation. Triple-A Travel Vice President Sandra Hughes:
"Almost 60 million Americans are going to be traveling 50 or more miles from over this holiday season, which is very good news for the travel industry. Since schools will be closed for about two weeks this year, we expect many more Americans will be taking trips this Christmas season than did last Christmas"
Auto travelers will find gas prices about 10 cents higher than they were a year ago, but down three cents since Thanksgiving. And what about the winter weather? Triple-A says the snowstorm that socked the northeast earlier this month should remind all travelers to give themselves plenty of time to safely reach their destinations.
