CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Oct. 18, 2005--Potbelly Sandwich Works wants to celebrate a special ''holiday'' in a unique and quirky way. The sandwich joint that has been serving up local charm, live music and great sandwiches since 1977 will honor its menu staple with the ''Belly Buster'' sandwich eating contest on November 3, 2005,which happens to be National Sandwich Day. In nine college-town Potbelly stores across the country, contestants will vie to see who can consume the most Potbelly sandwiches in five minutes flat. Winners in each city will be based on the total number of sandwiches eaten within the five minute time limit and each winner will receive $500 cash. National Sandwich Day ''toasts'' the creation of the sandwich in 1762 as a time-saving form of nourishment.
Potbelly is calling all sandwich lovers 18 and older to test their appetite and have a chance at experiencing five minutes of heaven. ''This is a fun opportunity for our customers,'' says Potbelly Chairman and CEO Bryant Keil. ''We`ll provide as many of our sandwiches as they can eat, and all they have to do is show up hungry.''
At 4:00 p.m. local time, on November 3, 2005, the contest will be held simultaneously in nine cities at Potbelly stores on or near college campuses. ''Hosting the Belly Buster contest at these stores is a great way to celebrate National Sandwich Day,'' says Keil. ''College students have been especially loyal Potbelly customers since the days when we only had one store in Chicago.''
To become a Belly Buster contestant, all anyone has to do is fill out an entry form at any participating Potbelly restaurant. Each store will select five contestants at random to participate in the contest.
