Local community and Hispanic Scholarship Fund generate $180,000 for Hispanic students
CINCINNATI--(HISPANIC PR WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Apr 26, 2002--GE Aircraft Engines (GEAE) and Procter & Gamble (P&G;) are teaming up with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) to present the First Annual Greater Cincinnati Hispanic Scholarship Fund Gala in the Tri-State. The sold-out event will take place this Saturday, April 27, at Kingsgate Conference Center, 151 Goodman Avenue, from 6:30 PM until 1:00 AM. Anthony Muoz, former Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman, will be among the special guests in attendance. Sara Martinez Tucker, President and CEO of HSF, will be the keynote speaker, and City Council Representatives Chris Monzel and David Pepper will present a certificate of appreciation to HSF proclaiming April 27, 2002 “Hispanic Scholarship Fund Day” in Cincinnati.
“Thanks to the funds raised by the First Annual Greater Cincinnati Hispanic Scholarship Fund Gala we will be able to make the college dreams of Hispanic students a reality, ” said Sara Martinez Tucker of the Tri-State initiative. “Through partnerships with companies like GE and Procter and Gamble, HSF is providing more scholarships to deserving Latino students in the Tri-State area. ”
Plans for the event were well received at GE Aircraft Engines where employees are encouraged to volunteer their time in the community. “Teaming up with P&G; and HSF to bring the First Annual Greater Cincinnati Hispanic Scholarship Fund Gala to our own backyard makes sense, since today Hispanics account for one of four new workers entering the labor force.” said Nelson Rosario, Manager, International Programs and champion of Hispanic employee initiatives at GE Aircraft Engines.
Procter & Gamble has long recognized that having a diverse work force is the right thing to do and is critical to winning in the marketplace. “It is a business imperative to hire, train, develop and retain outstanding Hispanic leaders for both our business and community,” said Kerry Clark, Vice Chairman of the Board at P&G.; “Efforts like this to help more local Hispanic students complete their college education are extremely important to the future of Cincinnati and the businesses that call this town home” added Clark.
Although P&G; and GE have been long-time supporters of HSF throughout its 27-year history, Hispanic employees of both companies believed there was an opportunity to bring HSF’s efforts closer to home and came together to plan the event. Other local corporate supporters joined the effort, including Toyota, The Kroger Company, Chiquita Brands International, Federated Department Stores and Convergys Corporation. Among educators and student organizations that supported the event were Thomas More College, Xavier University, Cincinnati State & Technical College, Northern Kentucky University, University of Cincinnati and U. C. Students - Latinos en Accin. In addition, small business owners, employees and other members of the community helped by purchasing individual tickets. As a result, the event will generate $60,000 and through a generous gift from the Lilly Endowment, Inc., the Hispanic Scholarship Fund will match the proceeds two-to-one to reach a total of $180,000.
