3M Foundation Awards Vision Grants to Four Private Colleges

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--May 20, 2003--Four private colleges with proposals ranging from improving water quality to social research and film documentaries are receiving grants totaling almost $200,000 through the 3M Vision Grant program in 2003. These grants are designed to foster innovation in private colleges by supporting new, academically based initiatives that transform the basis of learning by involving students in community concerns.

''Innovation is a cornerstone of 3M`s culture,'' said Fred Harris, staff vice president, 3M Community Affairs and Workforce Diversity. ''The 3M Foundation Vision Grant invests in innovative approaches to learning that bring colleges and communities together to address community issues. As the 3M Foundation celebrates its 50th anniversary, we are pleased to recognize these colleges for creating visionary programs that move theory into practice by taking learning beyond the classroom and into the community.''

In the 16 years of the Vision Grant program, 76 grants totaling more than $3.1 million have been awarded to private colleges located in 3M communities across the country. This year`s recipients will implement programs in environmental sciences, arts, science outreach and entrepreneurship.


2003 3M Foundation Vision Grant recipients:

- Baylor University, Waco, Texas

Uniting Students from Baylor and Area High Schools to Improve Water Quality -- High school, undergraduate and graduate students will combine environmental science class and fieldwork to evaluate methods and technologies with a potential to reduce water pollution in Central Texas.


- Mount St. Mary`s College, Los Angeles, Calif.

Film and Social Change: A Documentary Film Program -- This program is a collaborative pilot between the art and sociology departments. Working with members of the sociology department, film students will develop documentary films that profile individuals or organizations that are serving Los Angeles`s underserved communities.


- Northwestern College, St. Paul, Minn.

Research Bound: Integrating Scientific Research with High School and College Students --The program provides an opportunity for college students to mentor and help broaden high school students` understanding of scientific research. Guided by a faculty advisor, a college student and four high school students will collaborate on biology research projects.


- St. Edward`s University, Austin, Texas

Texas Women and Minority Entrepreneurs Case Studies and Simulations -- Faculty and student teams will develop interactive case studies and simulations that portray the talent and innovation of Texas women and minority entrepreneurs.
