Los Angeles Based Sweatshop-Free T-Shirt and Apparel Company to Debut New Sustainable Line of Organic Apparel

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Jul 8, 2003--Sweatshop-free T-shirt manufacturer American Apparel to introduce its latest innovation: the Sustainable Edition T, made from luxurious transitional organic combed cotton. American Apparel will offer three of the company`s most popular styles -- Girly Basic T (4305), Girly Fine Jersey T (2102), Thong (4313) and Standard American Fine Jersey T (2001) will be available in the Natural color of this environmentally friendly fabric.

Currently employing over 1000 people, American Apparel has always been dedicated to implementing socially responsible business practices that include paying a living wage and is now beginning to intensify its focus on preserving the environment and promoting positive ecological practices. One method of encouraging this change is by cutting down on the use of conventional cotton. The company recognizes that 25% of world pesticide use occurs during the cotton cultivation process; pesticide use which not only harms the environment but is
suspected of causing 8000 deaths per year. American Apparel`s introduction of the Sustainable Edition T is the company`s first and most crucial step in dealing with this problem.

By 2004 Senior Partner, Dov Charney expects that over 20% of the company`s cotton consumption will be derived from environmentally friendlier sources. ''We are working closely with the Organic Consumers Association'' (www.organicconsumers.org), Charney states, ''to obtain their endorsement of our overall plan.'' Within four years, American Apparel`s entire inventory is expected to be constructed of over 80% transitional or pure organic cotton. ''With the launch of the `Sustainable Edition,` and commitment to convert 80% of all cotton to organic or similar sources over 4 years, American Apparel is becoming one of the most environmentally responsible businesses in the industry,'' said Chris Treter, coordinator for Organic Consumers Association, Clothes For A Change.

By no means in integrating environmentally friendly fabric does this compromise American Apparel`s style and youth-driven fashion for environmental ethics. The company`s new Sustainable cotton line is tailored in the same fitted, sexy, popular fashions. American Apparel has been at the forefront of style and social responsibility and is now setting new standards of environmental consciousness within the apparel industry while encouraging consumers to value high-quality products made with integrity. The company continues to expand on its employee programs and environmental policies with a continued commitment to better design, technology, quality that enhances the lives of workers, customers, the community, and the environment.
