While parents make back-to-school immunizations a priority for their pre-teen children, they may forget to check their own immunization status and those of older children. The National Association of School Nurses is urging families to make back-to-school immunizations a family affair so the entire family is protected against diseases like tetanus and diphtheria. N-A-S-N President Janis Hootman:
What we are advocating is a whole family wellness visit. Ideally, all family members could take advantage of a scheduled doctors visit and receive updated immunizations for diseases such as tetanus and diphtheria.
The C-D-C estimates that more than half of Americans over the age of 20 lack protection against diphtheria and tetanus and recommends a single booster shot every 10 years. Check with your doctor for other vaccines such as influenza and pneumococcal disease that may be needed periodically. Visit w-w-w dot immunize dot org to learn more.
