A daily aspirin can reduce the risk of a first heart attack by 32 percent according to a report published in the current issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.  Doctor Charles Hennekens is the senior author of the Archives report:

Our findings clearly show that the more widespread and appropriate use of aspirin would avoid hundreds of thousands of first heart attacks each year in the United States.

Yet research shows two-thirds of the 62 million Americans who could benefit from aspirin therapy are not taking it, especially women.  Heart disease is the number one killer among women, but surveys show that women rank heart disease as a lower concern than many other diseases.  In response, Womens Heart Advantage has partnered with Bayer aspirin as part of their on-going efforts to educate women about cardiovascular disease and how they can manage their risk, including the potential benefits of daily aspirin therapy.  Visit womensheartadvantage-dot-org, for more information.
