Suggested anchor lead-in: Heartburn affects 25 million people in the U.S. everyday. One of the biggest impacts for those with heartburn is not enjoying the foods they love.
According to a recent National Heartburn Alliance Survey, the number one trigger for heartburn is food and beverage. But NHBA nutritionist, Pat Baird says heartburn friendly-cooking doesnt have to be dull:
Fatty foods or those foods that are high in acid content are common heartburn triggers. Also, how you prepare foods is important roasting or baking as opposed to frying or sauting is a good first step. And you might also try using broths, juice or wine instead of butter or oil. These simple adjustments can enhance the flavor without causing heartburn.
Being creative in the kitchen is easier than you think. Ms. Baird suggests ways to liven up salmon with a miso glaze or create your own pizza-roasted chicken. However, modifying foods alone may not be enough, for those who experience heartburn symptoms two or more days a week, diet and medication such as Prilosec OTC, may be the key to controlling heartburn.
