The nations largest lawyers organization wants to make it easier for Americans to answer the call to jury duty. After six months of intensive study, the American Bar Association has come up with proposed new Principles for Juries and Jury Trials. A-B-A president Robert Grey says the principles are aimed at bringing the American jury system into the 21st century:
We need to do a better job of removing the obstacles people imagine when they receive a jury summons. If these Principles become A-B-A policy, we will distribute them around the country, and encourage every jurisdiction to adopt them. Next to voting, jury service is the most fundamental way for citizens to get involved in our democracy. We owe it to them to make it as easy as possible to do so.
Among the suggested principles are higher pay for jurors, allowing them to take notes in all trials, and making sure that employers understand and support jury service. The recommendations will be put to a vote of the A-B-A House of Delegates for possible adoption as policy in February.
