Innovative WiFi Application to Help Students Navigate Campus
NEARSPACE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE via COLLEGIATE PRESSWIRE)--Sep 18, 2003--NearSpace, a company that provides business-oriented, location-centric software applications to higher education, healthcare, and the event marketplace, announced today that The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) has deployed the NearSpace Insider(TM) on its campus in Richardson, Texas. The NearSpace Insider(TM) is a custom application that integrates school information with dynamic maps representing the campus. The application can be used on a wide range of mobile computers, including notebooks, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), Tablet PCs, and web-enabled phones. Sixteen of UTD`s McDermott Scholars, among the university`s top students, will be provided with a PalmOS device with the NearSpace Insider(TM) and access to the university`s 802.11 network for getting updates, submitting survey results, etc. ``Applications such as NearSpace, coupled with Palm(TM) handhelds, mean students can stay on top of their studies, get where they need to go on time, and know they`ve got the latest campus news and information,`` said Michael Buhr, senior director of business, education, and enterprise marketing, Palm Solutions Group. ``And the cool factor of having one of these sleek, silver productivity tools with high-resolution color screen means that students will really use them.`` NearSpace was established in 1999 by a founder and other key early contributors to Autodesk, the leading developer of design automation software. The company began by developing mobile solutions for events, where its PDA Meeting Guide now sets the standard among managers of sales meetings, tradeshows, and association meetings. The company quickly found that its applications could be useful in a wide variety of business environments, and on a wide variety of platforms, and recently began marketing its software to universities. The NearSpace Insider(TM) is now installed at Stanford University and University of South Dakota; deployments are under way at University of Chicago and University of Minnesota. NearSpace CEO Creighton Hoke said: ``We`re delighted by the warm reception we`re getting from educators and IT professionals on university campuses. They immediately see the value that NearSpace can provide to students and campus visitors all year round.``
