West Nile Virus is a serious infection that can be transmitted to people from a bite of an infected mosquito . it is spreading throughout the united states right now   thankfully there are some simple steps people can take to protect themselves: CDC Director Dr Julie Gerberding,

"Last year, thousands of people across the United States were affected by West Nile Virus.  And, unfortunately, the virus is back again and people are getting sick.  So, I want to encourage everyone to "Fight the Bite" by using insect repellents that contain DEET and also removing standing water from around your home, because that is where mosquitoes breed. If you have been bitten by a mosquito and you come down with the symptoms of West Nile Virus, such as a headache or high fever, please see your doctor right away.

Gerberding points out mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, so be sure to protect yourself at those times, and when possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
