Middle-ear infections are one of the most common childhood conditions, leading to approximately 30 million doctor visits each year. Of these children, almost half experience three or more painful episodes caused by a condition known as antibiotic-resistance. But there is good news; data recently released compared two popular antibiotics for middle-ear infections, Augmentin ES 600 and Zithromax, to test their ability to fight infection and antibiotic resistance. Doctor Alejandro Hoberman of Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh explains:
The study found that Augmentin ES 600 not only showed significant improvement in clinical outcome of the children treated, but also that it eradicated the most difficult to treat bacteria pathogens that cause repeated ear infections nearly 40 percent more than Zithromax.
The study showed that 91 percent of children who were prescribed Augmentin ES 600 improved or were cured at the end of therapy versus only 81 percent of those treated with Zithromax.
