The end of summer doesnt mean the end of mosquito season. So the West Nile Virus will remain a threat well into the fall. With over 23-hundred cases this year and 44 deaths, finding a cure is critical. Theres no treatment for West Nile Virus yet, but a company called A-V-I BioPharma is working to change that. Last fall A-V-I BioPharma successfully treated penguins infected with the virus at a Wisconsin zoo. The company just became the first to begin clinical testing of a drug for West Nile patients in hospitals around the U.S. Alan Timmins of A-V-I BioPharma:
Weve gone from understanding the West Nile Virus genetic code to starting the trial in just nine months, which is a huge accomplishment. Were confident that this drug has the potential to make a difference in the fight against West Nile Virus.
