Suggested Anchor Lead: In 1903, the Wright brothers left their footprints in the North Carolina sand and their mark on the world. Now, one hundred years later, the invention of powered flight ranks among the most significant moments in human history. Lee Shepherd has that story.
Built in 1937, the Piper J3C65 Cub is widely credited with launching the private aviation industry. A tail-dragger, it was made of wood, metal and fabric and weighed just a thousand pounds. It was fun, reliable and simple to fly, and enabled people to take to the skies without spending a fortune. Like many pilots, world-renown stunt pilot Patty Wagstaffs first plane was also a Piper Cub:
I think the Cub is probably one of the most fun airplanes to fly because its simple, you can open the window and open the door and just look outside and see the cows, see the people on the beach or wherever youre flying.
Interested in flying the Piper Cub - but dont have your pilots license? Wagstaff says Flight Simulator 2004, A Century of Flight, is the next closest thing:
Think what Flight Sim offers is a chance to really put you in the cockpit. Here you can go to your computer store, you can go back to your computer, you can hook this thing up and you can really, really fly the airplane.
Stunt pilot, Patty Wagstaff.
