Last week, authorities in Germany arrested an 18-year-old student believed to be the cause of the latest computer virus, Sasser, which began disabling thousands of computers over a week ago.

The arrest came after several tips were provided through a new cash reward program created by Microsoft in cooperation with local and international law enforcement agencies. The program offers cash rewards for any information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for unleashing harmful computer viruses and "worms." These developments are another example of industry leadership that will help consumers in the ongoing war against viruses, "worms" and spam, that's according to Jim Pendergast Executive Director of Americans for Technology Leadership:

"Well, this arrest is great news for consumers who are victimized by computer viruses, 'worms' and SPAM sent out by criminals. Novel solutions like the Microsoft Reward Program and creative investigative techniques prove that the technology industry is serious about taking the lead in protecting consumers. From improved SPAM technologies to fighting the spread of viruses in close coordination with law enforcement, the high-tech industry has stepped-up-to-plate and offered technology solutions along with innovated programs to stop the perpetrators of these crimes."
