On Saturday, June 16th, a business icon is turning 30, the U-P-C bar code. This Saturday at the Marsh Grocery Store in the small town of Troy, Ohio where the worlds first scan occurred, a celebration is taking place to mark the occasion. The original cashier, Sharon Buchanan, who scanned the first bar-coded product, a pack of Wrigley gum, will join others in commemorating the occasion. Jack Rosso from the Uniform Code Council, the group that brought the bar code to life:

"We at the Uniform Code Council are absolutely delighted to be celebrating this 30th birthday of the bar code or the Universal Product Code, as we call it. It saved massive amounts of money all over the world and made shopping a pleasure for customers in just about every country. But, theres something coming called the E-P-C, or Electronic Product Code, its going to be even greater part of our lives just like the bar code."

Today the Universal Product Code is now used by 23 major industry sectors.
