Across many parts of the country, homeowners are losing the battle against fire ants. Its estimated that 20 million people are stung each year and for some people, fire ants stings can cause serious health problems. A recent study indicates that 10 to 15 percent of those stung experience severe localized allergic reactions, with one to two percent experiencing dangerous systemic reactions that in rare cases result in death. But now, a single professional application of a new product can deliver a year of control. Doctor Ann Weise, an entomologist with Bayer Environmental Science:

"Well, Topchoice was developed to take advantage of fire ant foraging behavior. It eliminates the existing fire ant mounds and actually prevents new ones from being formed for a year. Homeowners should call their local pest control or lawn care operators for treatments."

Fire ants currently infest southern states, but theyre moving northward and westward into Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri and Virginia. In addition to the health threat, fire ants also cause some two billion dollars worth of property damage each year.
