A new health education initiative is bringing together two groups parents trust to address concerns about the cardiovascular health of Americas youth. Physicians and teachers will be part of a unique program led by the Wellpoint Foundation and the American Heart Association western states affiliate. Doctor Daniel Salinas, Wellpoint Medical director, explains the program:
Physicians and teachers are really on the front lines when it comes to youth health issues such as cardiovascular disease and obesity. We wanted to draw on the expertise of both of these groups as we put together some heart-healthy educational resources. Were focusing on nutrition, physical fitness and smoking cessation because these are the areas with the greatest impact on cardiovascular health.
Print and web-based materials in English and Spanish will be made available nationwide for use in homes, schools and doctors offices.
