In a world without spam, Americans would have the cleanest teeth. This is among the many interesting factoids that were uncovered in Yahoo!s first global survey of email users. Yahoo! surveyed 37 thousand people across five continents to gain a better understanding of their experiences with spam and viruses. The results of the survey brought to light many interesting differences and similarities among email users around the world. Miles Libbey, anti-spam product manager for Yahoo! Mail:
"As an email inbox provider for tens of millions of people around the world, we need to understand the cultural nuances of our users. We know that people in the U.S. rely on email providers to teach them how to avoid spam, which is why we created the Anti-Spam Resource Center. We introduced our Addressguard feature for those users, including Argentineans, who are wary of shopping online for fear of receiving spam. Because people around the world agree that receiving spam is more stressful than traffic jams, we are committed to providing our users with the right tools and resources to combat this issue."
Email users around the globe are unanimous on their fear of viruses. Over 70 percent of respondents in every country Yahoo! surveyed have anti-virus software on their computers. In general, people are more knowledgeable about viruses than they are about spam, but things appear to be improving on this front.
