A class of drug that millions of people rely on to help lower cholesterol could have many other advantages as well.  But medical experts fear confusion about the drugs might prevent many people from benefiting.

Statins have been proven to be very effective at lowering cholesterol. And statins are continually being studied to see if they offer additional benefits for treating diseases like multiple sclerosis, type-two diabetes, and breast cancer.  However, some claim statins should be avoided because of harmful side effects.  But a leading cardiologist disagrees.  Doctor Benjamin Ansell of U-C-L-A says these F-D-A approved drugs - including the statin, Crestor(R), have been carefully scrutinized:

"We know that there are potential for side effects with medications, but these are small relative to the benefits of this class.  Crestor(R), the most recent addition to this field, has been shown to be equally as safe as the others."

Of course, any medication should be taken only at the dosage prescribed:

"The real problem in this country are patients not getting treated either at all, or appropriately for their cholesterol problems."
