In response to recent news, AstraZeneca sets the record straight and stands behind Crestor.
AstraZeneca is urging the F-D-A to dismiss Public Citizens petition to remove its cholesterol lowering drug, Crestor, from the market. In a 30-page response sent to the F-D-A, AstraZeneca states that Public Citizens petition has used unscientific and inaccurate arguments. In post-marketing experience involving more than two million patients, the makers of Crestor have found that the safety of the drug is consistent with pre-approval investigations and comparable to the other currently marketed statins. As with all drugs it is necessary to follow prescribing information to minimize the risk of side effects. Doctor Chrystie Ballantyne of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston:
All statins, including Crestor, are safe and effective if used appropriately with medical supervision.
At the time of F-D-A approval, Crestor had been evaluated in more than 10 thousand patients, more than any other marketed statin and is currently approved in more than sixty countries.
