Despite years of warnings about osteoporosis, research shows the average woman still doesnt get enough calcium every day.  Now womens health advocates are trying a new approach.

Osteoporosis affects 44 million Americans.   But when you go in for a checkup, do you ask about preventing brittle bones?

I probably should, but I dont.

Shes right.  She should!  Six out of 10 women who think theyre getting enough calcium arent.  In fact, new data from the Centers for Disease Control shows most women fall short of their daily calcium requirement.  Doctor Gloria Bachmann is from the Womens Health Institute at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  She says women need to be their own health advocates.  That means doing your homework before your regular doctor visits:

Our research shows women will get more from their doctors appointments, if they go in better prepared.

A new tool called The Checkup Calcium Companion is now available to help women know what questions to ask and alert them to the latest information on preventing osteoporosis:

For example, a simple step like taking a calcium supplement can make a big difference in a womans bone health.
