For the first time, consumers can get a new type of American Express-branded card. This one is issued by MBNA, and it offers numerous benefits, including double points for travel and dining and special retail offers for which American Express is known. But best of all, a portion of the spending on the card supports a favorite college or university, a charity or a professional group.  Consumers can choose from more than a thousand groups. Adriane Berg, personal finance author and journalist:

Be sure that your credit cards work for you.  The new MBNA American Express card displays right there on the front of the card, an image of your alma mater, your hobby, and your profession. The card reflects your affinity, shows what is meaningful to you, who you are, what you care about. Every time you use the card, you get not only great benefits, but also your favorite affinity organization gets a portion of your spending. Everybody wins.
