For the first time in the country, a bill with tough penalties to help stop underage kids from getting alcohol has passed in the Virginia legislature. Under the new law, any person under the legal drinking age, or an adult who knowingly supplies them with alcohol, can lose their driving privileges. Diageo, the worlds leading premium drinks business and other groups who sponsored the legislation are hoping its a national trend. Guy Smith is the Executive V-P of Diageo:
There are already 10 states that have similar bills ready to be passed. We at Diageo are excited because we think this is the start of a national trend of developing creative ways to get tougher against underage drinkers and the adults who supply them.
According to Century Council research, 65 percent of underage drinkers get their alcohol either from family members or adult friends. So targeting adults will directly crackdown on the supply. The Virginia law takes effect July first. The best way to prevent underage drinking? Talk to kids while they are still in middle school.
