Fewer taxpayers are writing a check to Uncle Sam this April 15th, instead paying their income taxes with debit and credit cards, close to $1 billion last year.  James Weaver speaks for Official Payments Corp, authorized by the I-R-S and 25 states to process debit and credit card tax payments:

"Many consumers are shocked when they complete their tax return and find that they have a balance due, and our service allows that consumer to charge that payment and pay it off on their own schedule."

Other taxpayers do it for the rewards. Many card companies offer cash rebates, reward points, or frequent flyer miles.  Although there is a convenience fee, savvy taxpayers are getting expensive airline tickets much cheaper this way.  And some do it for convenience, paying their bill online from home, avoiding long lines at the post office.  The process begins at officialpayments-dot-com.
