The nation�s largest organization of lawyers is meeting in San Francisco.  As the national representative for the legal profession, members of the American Bar Association will be debating key legal issues and voting on new policy.  Among the measures to be discussed is a proposal urging the department of defense to revise rules for military tribunals to assure that so-called enemy combatants can receive the effective legal assistance of civilian defense lawyers.  A.P. �This proposal represents an attempt to help our government protect the safety and freedom of our own citizens and maintain the cherished standards of justice and due process that have made our national great.�

The proposal will not become ABA policy unless adopted by the ABA House of Delegates, the 540-member policy-making body that convenes Monday morning.
