According to a new survey from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, more than 70 percent of people with asthma are unaware that government treatment guidelines exist, and more than half dont know that once their asthma is under control they should speak to their physician to see if they can step down treatment, or if they still need to step up.  Asthma expert Doctor Gillian Shepherd, Professor at Cornell University:

Successful asthma management begins with good communication between a patient and a physician.  This dialogue helps a patient better understand their asthma, what the treatment course is and whether they are being stepwise knowing how much medication they need to control their asthma.
