Instant Messaging, or I-M as its now called, has gone mainstream both at home and in the workplace, with more than seven billion instant messages being sent each day, but a new survey of Instant messaging trends from A-O-L reveals just how widespread instant messaging has become. Fully 90 percent of teens and young adults say they send I-Ms, and I-M use in the workplace and on mobile phones and P-D-As is growing rapidly. New York, Miami and Chicago are the three most active cities for instant messaging. Christopher Smith of A-O-L:
Instant Messaging is one of the fastest growing applications online, in part, because its free. Anybody can do it anytime, anywhere. About 30 percent of Americans send as many if not more Instant Messages than email.
Hot trends revealed in this years survey include photo sharing, having multiple I-M screen names and away messaging, which enables I-M users to let friends and co-workers know that theyre are away from their computer, where theyve gone and when theyll be back.
