Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem in pets, affecting an astounding 80 percent of dogs and 70 per cent of cats. In continued efforts to promote healthy smiles and healthy bodies in pets, a nationwide public awareness campaign is underway to celebrate February as National Pet Dental Health Month. Oral disease such as periodontitis can lead to bleeding gums, pain, tooth loss and infection of the heart, liver and kidneys. Board certified veterinarian, Doctor Ken Capron, immediate past president of the American Veterinary Dental College:
This is the 11th year for National Pet Dental Month and it remains as important as ever to provide quality dental care to pets, including the proper nutrition. As bacteria builds-up in a pets mouth it can turn to plaque and tartar, which then leads to infection and more severe health problems.
Pet owners are encouraged to visit their veterinarian and implement a home dental program for their pet. Visit petdental-dot-com for more information.
