Choosing a safe and effective over-the-counter cold and flu medication is an important concern for the 65 million Americans who suffer from high blood pressure. Many O-T-C medications contain decongestants, which have been reported to temporarily increase blood pressure. Doctor Roger Blumenthal of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine:
It is important that people with high blood pressure carefully screen all over-the-counter medications to make sure that they do not contain ingredients which may further raise blood pressure. This includes avoiding nasal decongestants during the cold and flu season.
Doctor Blumenthal recommends high blood pressure patients look for cold and flu remedies that do not contain a decongestant, such as Coricidin H-B-P products, which are specially formulated for people with high blood pressure.
