"Phishing" is a growing form of e-mail fraud often used to conduct online identity theft. According to analysts, more than 57 million Americans said they received a phishing email in 2004. But online security expert Brad Garlinghouse of Yahoo! Mail has some tips to avoid the bait of a phishing scam before you get caught:
"As the number one email provider in the U.S., security has been a top priority for Yahoo!. Phishing emails are designed to look almost exactly like an email from a trusted brand particularly from financial institutions. There are a couple of things you can look for to determine if you've received a Phishing e-mail: Urgent requests for example for you to update your personal information by email are also a tell-tale sign, they often look like they came from your bank or another trusted brand. As a general rule, you should never respond to emails asking for your passwords, credit card numbers or other sensitive, personal information."
