Theres important new information for people with alcoholism. This week a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association evaluating more than 600 alcohol-dependent patients in the U.S. showed that a monthly injection of an investigational drug plus counseling helped to significantly reduce the number of heavy drinking days. Thursday, April 7th, is National Alcohol Screening Day where anyone can take a free paper-and-pencil screening, talk with a health professional and learn about treatment options. Doctor Douglas Jacobs:
At screening sites you can learn more about risky drinking, alcohol abuse and dependence, and what to do to help yourself or someone you care about.
Doctor Mark Willenbring of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism:
Combining counseling with medication may result in significant improvements in treatment outcomes for patients with alcohol dependence. This provides new hope for people suffering from alcohol use disorders and their families.
