Research presented at the 72nd annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons includes important findings on the causes and prevention of Anterior Cruciate Ligament injuries in female athletes. Women suffer A-C-L injuries at a significantly higher rate than men. Data shows injury among women basketball players is twice that for men, and that female soccer players are four times more likely to experience an A-C-L tear than their male counterparts. Studies also show that ballet dancers have an extremely low incidence of A-C-L problems compared to both men and women, which may offer new insight about how to reduce A-C-L injuries. Doctor Henry T. Goitz, Associate Professor and Chief, Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, Medical College of Ohio and Director of the Center for Performing Arts Medicine:
"The training of the female ballet dancer may provide the key to our understanding of A-C-L injury prevention in the female athlete."
