April is Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or I-B-S Awareness Month, created to increase recognition of the condition among those who are affected by it.  A survey by the International Foundaton for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders showed that many people who have I-B-S dont even know it, despite the fact that its symptoms can severely hamper their lives.  As many as 40 million Americans have I-B-S, yet only about one in five gets diagnosed.  Doctor Lin Chang from U-C-L-A, a leading expert on I-B-S:

So many patients have come to me after years of living with chronic abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation and other symptoms.  Some dont realize that these symptoms are caused by a disorder that a doctor can help them manage.  For these people, diagnosis is the first step toward improving the way they live.

If you think you may have I-B-S, see your doctor.  He or she can help you manage I-B-S.  To learn more visit aboutibs-dot-org.
