This month is "Wipe Out Smoking" month.

The American Lung Association, American Cancer Society and The Office of National Drug Control Policy are warning parents about the two "smokes" putting our children at risk cigarettes and marijuana. Marijuana is the smoking risk that many parents dont think about - but research shows todays kids are almost as likely to try marijuana as cigarettes, and marijuana can lead to addiction. In fact, more kids are in drug treatment for marijuana use than for all other illicit drugs combined. John Kirkwood, C-E-O of the American Lung Association:

"There are several problems with marijuana use and lung health. First are the short-term problems increased cough, mucus production, and higher rates of infection. But more seriously, there are long-term consequences in terms of heightened risk for lung cancer. Its a result of 50-70 percent more carcinogenic material in marijuana smoke than there is in tobacco smoke."

Kirkwood says parents can make a difference in preventing their kids from ever lighting up. Free resources are available at the-anti-drug-dot-com, or by calling 1-800-788-2800.
