A new study concludes that long-term use of Androgel (testosterone gel) is safe and effective for men with low testosterone. Men in the three-year study experienced sustained improvements in sexual function, sexual performance, mood, lean body mass and bone mineral density with continuous Androgel treatment. Doctor Ronald Swerdloff of Harbor U-C-L-A Medical Center in Los Angeles explains:

"I think that this information is very encouraging for the physicians who are treating patients with bona fide testosterone deficiency to help with both their understanding of benefits and more confidence about risks."

Low testosterone affects an estimated four million men in the U.S. and its prevalence increases in older men. Symptoms include diminished sex drive, erectile dysfunction, reduced muscle mass and depressed mood. Physicians can screen for low testosterone with a simple blood test. Testosterone should not be used in men with known or suspected prostate cancer.
